  • Newham residents urged to take Million Miles challenge

    Residents across the borough are being challenged to take part in an initiative aimed at helping people lead healthier lives and clock up a million miles in physical activity in just 100 days.

    Newham is the first place in the country to take part in the Million Miles Together initiative which encourages individuals or groups to record any forms of physical activity including swimming, running, walking, dancing or gardening they undertake on a special online portal.

    This will then turn the information into a mileage equivalent with the aim of all those taking part ‘travelling’ one million miles in 100 days – the equivalent of walking from Lands End to John O’Groats more than 1140 times or 40 times around the equator.

    Registration for the initiative – which is free for anyone living, working or studying in the borough to take part – opens on Saturday 3 September, with the Newham Million Miles Together challenge running between Saturday 1 October 2016 and Sunday 8 January 2017.

    The initiative is being supported by the council’s eight Community Neighbourhood Teams – set up by Newham Council to bring local people together at events and initiatives throughout the year. If 1,500 people from each of the community ...
